IHS Women’s Shelter Roof Garden
Architects Hawaii (AHL) designed a rooftop garden for the Institute of Human Services (IHS), a social services agency that provides emergency shelter and support services to O‘ahu’s homeless population. IHS approached AHL with the goal to start an urban agriculture skills training program with a garden full of vegetables and herbs that could enhance the nutrition of the meals served at IHS. Architects Hawaii’s strategic knowledge of building codes aided in providing a solution to constructing this rooftop project that also involved a 500 SF renovation on the third floor for lift access and structural reinforcing around columns.
This innovative and sustainable project was completed on a modest budget and as part of AHL’s 1% Solution program that is focused on providing pro bono services to non-profit organizations.
