Center of Waikiki 2284 Kalakaua
The old Waikiki Theatre’s design, a celebration of Hawai’i's tropical environment fused with the romance of 1930s art deco, prompted AHL to call it, “tropical deco.” AHL sensed that blending the old and new would be right for this site, and the “tropical deco” theme inspired the design of its new use as a retail center. Design elements, silhouettes, color and materials pay homage to the original with many elements exact replicas or reused materials from the old theatre. The original letters, WAIKIKI, were repaired and sit on top of the new building as a nostalgic reminder of times past.
