International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1186 Office Renovation

Design that will inspire innovation to transform the organization was the key mission for the renovation of IBEW Local Union 1186′s main offices in Kalihi. The Union, which was moving to a more global vision, wanted to create an environment that communicated clear concepts and ideals.
As the electrical workers play a very important role in Hawaii’s green building industry, their vision was to set an example for a new-generation of eco-sensitive workers.
Open-space designs were implemented, bringing in more natural light, opening new windows and reducing energy consumption. The open ceiling design is an homage to the profession of the IBEW members and showcases electrical work in its rawest form with a view of cabling, wiring and the intricacies of their work.
The new office utilizes environmentally friendly fixtures, furniture and space, made with recycled materials. Most of the old office and construction materials were recycled or prepped for reuse.

The product we got was an outstanding design, built by all union contractors, and during a time when construction was slow. As an electrical union, we not only “talk the talk” but “walk the walk” with a design that won an Architectural Award for office renovations, and got TV recognition from Blue Planet’s “Hawaii Makeover” for our use of renewable energy."
