Walmart/Sam’s Club Superblock
Making a 300,000-square-foot double stack big box retail space and a four-story parking structure look as if they belong in Hawaii presents a certain challenge. AHL, a 60-year-old homegrown company, used its deep respect and understanding of Hawaii’s sensibilities to make it happen. Incorporating smaller retail space, varying building heights to alleviate scale and using colors and landscaping to soften the impact, AHL also introduced architectural elements such as hip roofs and outdoor seating/eating areas for a true Hawaii style.
