Community

Success at AHL goes beyond the business of architecture. It also means caring about the community – donating time, money and expertise. AHL has raised money for Aloha United Way and contributed to the Food Bank, Aloha Council Boy Scouts of America, Pacific Aviation Museum, The Contemporary Museum, Kuakini Medical Center, the American Red Cross, Enterprise Honolulu, the March of Dimes, and The Ocean Conservancy. In 2006, on its 60th anniversary, AHL contributed $60,000 to the University of Hawai’i School of Architecture Endowment Fund.

In 2008, AHL became the only O’ahu architecture firm to join the national “The 1%” program – a community giving program that connects nonprofits with architecture and design firms. AHL donated and encouraged its vendors to help commit more than $300,000 (AHL contributed 3,200 man hours) to The Salvation Army Family Treatment Services Facility to provide housing and program for homeless women and their children.

In 2009, AHL began a “Free Green” program to encourage sustainable practices among small businesses in Chinatown, guiding them toward their green goals. AHL volunteers also helped build a playground at the YMCA’s Camp Erdman.

This dedication to the community was recognized in 2009 by a panel of business people who awarded AHL the Pacific Business News Business Leadership Community Spirit Award.
